Support One Another!
The easy way to deal with emotions is to shut them down, but I encourage you to not be so quick in doing so, especially in this challenging moment in time. Take the time to mange emotional situations. In tough times we owe it to each other, especially our children and loved ones to listen and communicate.
Plan Ahead
I have to admit that my family and I are not planners. It would be unfortunate to miss out on checking something off of your summer bucket list just becasue you failed to plan or secure spots for one of your planned adventures. Do your research! Make sure you are prepared wherever the road might take you. Research combined with better planning will surely lead to less disappointment and more summertime success!
Think Differently
Instead of focusing on what you can't do this summer, or what is already fully booked think about what you can do. If you're anything like my family, you've already had more than one vacation canceled due to illness, flight issues, or family emergencies. The great thing about Colorado is that many activities don't require reservations or payment.
Get Outside
Here in Colorado there is a very large percentage of National Forest, BLM, and other public land available to camp on in all directions from our home or home base. No matter your level of physicality there is a hike, road, e-bike, or mountain bike ride out there for all levels and abilities. No trails nearby? No problem! Look into where you can find a local golf course, disc golf course, park, play structure, yoga class, or head into your yard to do some gardening or tend to the yard.
Explore More
Get out of your routine. Look at a map or rack your brain for something you've been dying to do for a long time. Go on an adventure. Get lost and maybe you will even check something off of that bucket list of yours!
Learn a New Skill
Or improve on one you already have. Get out of your comfort zone! My entire family knows how to skateboard. I never learned as a child and the adult in me has been too scared to learn, or shall I say too scared to fall. I decided summer 2020 is they year I will learn! The kids will continue to hone their cooking skills by working together to prepare the family a meal once each week. What skill have you never had the time or the guts to learn? Visiting Colorado this summer? Think about what you can do here that you can't do at home? Maybe you would like to try out rock climbing on real rocks? or hiking a 14,000' mountain!
Complete a Project Around the House
If you're anything like me, you have a long list of projects both in your house and outside that you have been putting off or frankly do not have time for. I always feel good when I get something checked off of my to-do list, especially when it is one of those larger projects that will continue to positively impact your life on a daily basis.
Take a class
Many colleges, universities, and other educational organizations are offering a wide variety of in person and online summer courses free of charge. In recent summers I took a high altitude online gardening class and a Wilderness First Aid course. I plan to continue taking as many classes as possible that relate to my career in real estate, and will keep my eye out for any other learning opportunity that might interest me, my family members, or friends.
Give Back
Life in a household that includes 2 adults who both work full time, 3 dogs, and 2 teenage kids is busy and always a bit of a juggling act. Personally I make volunteering a regular thing. I hang out a couple of times a month with my 7th grade mentee, help out at the food bank, coach at girls basketball camps, and help local non profits with spring clean up. As a family we haven't made time to volunteer together over the past few years. This summer it will be a priority!
I don't know about you, but I am absolutely looking forward to this summer and I hope you are too!
