Hiking is not only healthy for the body, mind, and sole of humans, but also incredibly rewarding for our 4-legged friends. It's important to be prepared when venturing out into to wilderness while also keeping your dog's needs and safety in mind!
Pet Fitness
Take into consideration your dog’s fitness level, the type of terrain you plan to hike, and remember hiking at high altitude affects your dog as well as you. Not all hikes are good hikes to bring your dogs on. Do you research and discuss your plans with your vet, especially if planning a hike on more challenging, snow packed or rocky, high elevation terrain.
Always Bring a Leash
You never know what you might encounter that could be a potential problem for you or your unleashed pet, from wildlife, to other dogs, stream and river crossings, and other designated trail uses such as mountain bikes, motorized use, and people on horseback. It’s better to be prepared. It's easy to forget when we embark on an adventure into the wild we are entering an intricate ecosystem that is home to many creatures and critters. We have moose, deer, elk, fox, mountain lions, bears, and porcupine here and you don't know how your dog will react.
Pack Extra Water
There may not be a source of water for your dog on the trail, so pack extra along with a bowl so you can share with your 4 legged friend.
Current Records
Make sure your dog is up to date on their vaccinations. Your vet's vaccination recommendations are oftentimes determined by where you plan to adventure and travel with your pup. Make sure each of your dogs has an up to date rabies tag and your current contact information on it prior to hitting the trails.
