Dillon

The Town That Has Moved 3 Times! The Town of Dillon clearly has a very unique history. Originally build and inhabited as a stage stop and trading post for the gold rush and incorporated in 1883.

By 1892 the town has been relocated twice to be closer to the railroad lines that were extended into the area. During the Great Depression, Denver Water began acquiring land around Dillon and in1856 town residents were notified that they would need to sell their land as well as homes and businesses to make way for Denver Water who would be building a damn downstream from the town and create what is known today as Lake Dillon, or Dillon Reservoir. Why? To help supply water to Colorado's front range communities. The current lakeside location of the small mountain town of Dillon has set the tone for what brings people to visit today. The view from Dillon is known to be one of the most beautiful views around, with onlookers taking in the magical view of the Tenmile Range, from Frisco to Breckenridge and Lake Dillon in the foreground. Dillon is a nice place to be based for anyone visiting Summit County and the surrounding areas. Dillon has numerous sporting goods stores and rental locations, a ton of tasty restaurants, and is less than 20 minutes away from 4 ski areas (Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Copper, and Loveland), 25 minutes from Breck, and 35 minutes from Vail. That's 5 ski areas within 35 minutes from your home base! Within a quick 5-20 minute drive from Dillon you can also quickly be engaged in other wintertime activities including, snowshoeing, nordic skiing, dog sledding, snow tubing, horse drawn sleigh rides, snowmobile rentals, and more!
